Local Gems: Last Light

Updated: Jul 7, 2019

I had an short workday on July 3rd ahead of the holiday. Anticipating a quiet city, with lots of folks out of town, Kevin and I decided to go grab some drinks with friends at a new rooftop bar on Bowery, Last Light at the top of the Sister City hotel.

It was a scorcher of a day, so we began the visit sitting outdoors and ended with a bit of AC indoors, in a booth. Though a (relatively) modest eleven stories up, you actually get a much better view North and South along Bowery than you might expect. Despite the almost 90 degree afternoon, we were able to sit outside for a while because there was a life-giving breeze that really helped us stay cool. The sun was mostly shrouded by hazy clouds as well so we didn't feel it beating down on us until it was almost time to go.

Last Light does a happy hour, dubbed Light Hour, every weekday from 3-6pm, offering beer specials and $10 classic cocktails. If you can't make it there for this pricing, you can still get $7 beers and $14 cocktails which is pretty good for a hotel bar, especially a rooftop one.

The bar opened in April and seems to still be somewhat of a relaxed, under-the-radar spot. I don't think that will last for long, but I'm hoping to squeeze a few more visits in this summer.

Above and below, some pictures from Last Light and the rest of our evening. We made our way downtown, stopping by Sel Rrose for oyster happy hour ($1.25 each until 7pm) and then Gelso & Grand in Little Italy for a frosé and some photobooth antics before heading to Chinatown for dinner at Great NY Noodletown.
